Marist College is a private liberal arts college of 240 acres, located on the east bank of the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie, which is a city in the US state of New York that serves as the county seat of Dutchess County. It is the largest principal city of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), containing all of Dutchess and Orange counties, which has more than 660 000 people, living within its limits, according to the 2007 census.
Marist College traces its roots back in the early 1816s, beginning with the Marist Brothers, the Marist Normal Training School evolving, in 1929, from the training center at the Hermitage, originally named Saint Ann’s Hermitage, where the training for young men for a life of ‘’study, work, prayer and service’’ first began. Today, there are approximately 5000 students who attend classes at the main Poughkeepsie campus, where they can choose from 43 bachelors and masters degree programs, as well as 20 certificates, in various fields of study.
Marist College competes in NCAA’s Division I MAAC Conference, in which it had experienced victory, many times, in the past years, capturing seven Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles during the 2004-05 academic year, earning all three JetBlue Airways MAAC Commissioner’s Cups. In 2007, the women’s basketball team has surprised the NCAA fans by becoming the third 13th seed to make it to the Sweet 16, since the women’s tournament expanded to 64 teams, returning to the NCAA tournament in 2010.
